Gamera: Advent of Legion

Making a sequel can be hard. The ability to accurately capture the magic that fans saw in the first film while at the same time moving the characters that were introduced forward in an emotional and soulful way is no easy feat to pull off. The Kaiju genre is not immune to this struggle of recreating a second in a series. Luckily for us, Gamers 2: Advent (Attack) of Legion succeeded to make a movie as good if not better then Guardian of the Universe. I know that ADV first and Mill Creek Entertainment as the continued to release kept calling the movie Attack of Legion but I knew it as Advent of Legion and personally think that’s the better title. Hence the review name.

After a meteorite crashes to earth but can’t be found afterward, scientists are quick to discover that the object was in actuality a hive of a mysterious creature that becomes known as Legion. The Legion’s mission is to spread themselves all over the universe by launching seeds that have the power to destroy entire towns as they erupt. Realizing the destructive nature of these beings from beyond the stars, Gamera appears and destroys their first seed. The large army of Legion soon gets the better of our shelled warrior and soon he finds himself outmatched. Will Gamera be able to find new strength and take down these evil planet destroying insects?

New giant monsters in movies is always a welcoming site. When things started to tip for Toho during the Heisei period they went the safe route and brought the classic monsters back to fight Godzilla instead of having any more new creatures. Not so with Gamera. After the first movie with his classic fight against Gyaos, they made sure to have a brand new baddie ready to mix things up. The Legion designs both the small and “Queen” model are truly menacing from the moment they appear on screen and remain that way until the last one is dead as bug on the windshield. Even when the creatures are laid out and thoroughly explained on what makes them tick they still somehow are able to retain a feeling of dread every time they are on screen.

gamera_2_legion_3

Ayako Fujitani returns once again as Asagi. Though Gamera seemed to disconnect her from the pain he feels at the end of the first movie, she still holds onto her amulet, believing that Gamera can still her thoughts and her cheers to never give up. The deep devotion the young girl has for Gamera would put her on the top 10 list of some of the best Kaiju and Human relationships that have ever graced the screen. Still don’t believe me, then take a look at the scene with the wound on her and where she insists its nothing as Gamera has already bleed for everyone. If that’s not devotion I don’t know what is.

Yes, I know I’m gushing again but I really can’t help it. The Gamera Heisei Trilogy is just so awesome that I can’t help but want to tell everyone about it. For those of you out there who haven’t shown this trilogy to anyone, first shame on you but second you have to! Think about it. Remember the final attack that Gamera used in the film and how awesome it was to witness. If you don’t show people this movie they will never see that attack and realize for themselves just how jaw dropping that scene is. Go on! Grab someone and movie marathon all three of films.

Rahxephon

rahxephon_1_640

In the wake of the genre changing anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, there were a lot of series that tried to copy the formula. Basically, the mecha series that tried copy Evangelion had a similar story where the giant robot of the series having aspirations to change the world. One of these series which I personally feel surpassed Evangelion itself is Rahxephon.

The young artist Kamina Ayato lives in Tokyo the last remaining city in the world. Soon his world is turned upside down when he is shown the truth that there is more to than just Tokyo in the world and Ayato`s connection to the mysterious giant robot Rahxephon. Does this powerful creation have the power to tune the world?

RahXephon.full.205930

One of the aspects that separates Rahxephon from Evangelion is the love story at the center between Ayato and Haruka. The attraction between the two of them is evident from the moment the two of them are on screen together. You really feel yourself wanting these two to get together and over come the odds that are thrown against them. Make no mistake these two have a lot to get through including she’s at least 12 years older then him, he’s a member of a mystical race, and Ayato catches Haruka kissing her ex-boyfriend. Still, even through the hardships you find yourself wanting them to hook up.

Mainpagepic

A problem that the series seemed to suffer from is that it seems to lack staying power. I mean I love this anime and count it among one of my favorites but unfortunately not a lot of others feel the same way. If I can find a big fault in it the series’ characters other than Ayato and Haruka are a bit on the forgetful side. I mean they don’t have the recognition factor that say Rei or Asuka from Evangelion have. Of course maybe if there were hundreds of figures of Haruka then the series might have the popularity that Evangelion has. Still, its true that the supporting cast is more generic than that of Evangelion but at least Rahxephon works hard to answer all the plot points that it sets up and doesn’t try to twists its fan’s minds just to tell a story.

I really do recommend this series though profusely. If the series finds its way onto Netflix or Hulu (scratch that I looked it up while I was typing up this post. It is on Hulu. The entire series), I highloy recommend that you take some time and rewatch this series. The mecha battles are entertaining in a way that’s just as inventive as Evangelion and the tug on your heart strings love story will keep you going throughout the series. And if you find yourself enjoying it, recommend it to someone else so this series can stay a classic for all to enjoy. Fly me to the music…

Godzilla: The series

Godzilla_The_Series

While talking with a fellow Kaiju aficionado I mentioned I was watching Godzilla the series in an effort to catch the episodes that I missed during its initial run more than ten years ago. Despite my praise for the series he stated that he had never seen it. This is what prompted me to write this review.

Picking up at the end of the movie, Nick Tatopolus looks searches the ruins of New York only to find the last surviving egg laid by creature. Imprinting on the creature who now seems him as a surrogate father, Nick assembles a team known as H.E.A.T. Together the team and Godzilla fight against all the mutant creatures that start appearing all over the world.

Despite the movie being incredible disappointment the series is a lot of fun. Some monsters that Godzilla fights seem to be a throw back to the some of his rivals and allies. I cant help but think that the Quecazalecutal is in homage to Rodan. The team also fights against mind controlling aliens which is always a classic story line. Also despite having a story line involving time travel which I didn’t really mind myself enjoying in Godzilla vs. King Ghidora the episode entitled Future Shock was incredible enjoyable and one of my favorite of the series. Also, the whole running gag with the robot N.I.G.E.L. being destroyed every episode never got old to me. It’s one of those few running gags that worked.

godzilla-the-series-3_61

Unfortunately the series is not without some flaws and one of biggest ones is one it shares with the original movie. The flaw is that the character Audrey Timmons continues to keep coming around and sadly she seems to be even worse than in the movie. Now your probably thinking “that’s impossible because she was already an annoying character in the movie there is no way she could be more annoying” but you’d be wrong. See, throughout the series there are a lot of personal moments for the team of H.E.A.T. but known really for Audrey. She is exactly as she was in the movie, dedicated more to her career then anything else getting story no matter the cost. Every story involving Audrey either involves her chasing down a story no matter the cost or trying to have a relationship with Nick despite the fact they continually dance around the issue that they are both career oriented and shouldn’t be together. It’s an annoying fact that sadly always came full circle. Just break up already!

Godzilla: the series is an example of good that comes out of a bad opening. Much like how others compliment the story lines that come after Spiderman’s “One More Day” story line being entertaining, this is a series that does spin off from a terrible movie that we all wish had been better than it actually was. My advice: Enjoy the adventures of Zilla Jr. and the H.E.A.T. team on their own and just try to forget about the movie all together. I only wish it was still on Netflix so I could recommend people watching it immediately but sadly it is not there at the time of the review. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Macross

robotech-maguire

Have you ever talked with an old school anime fan? I mean true old school anime fan, not those who look at Toonami with a sense of nostalgia but those who were fans from before the creation of cartoon network. The three titles these true old schoolers will mention is StarBlazers (Space Battleship Yamata), Voltron (Beast King Golion) and Robotech. the show Robotech is particularly notorious fore being created by typing three series together with no other connection to create s huge spanning universe. Still, its the first arc, the one based on Super Dimension Fortress Macross that people feel the most love for. The reason: Its just so damn good.

AJ201306180049M

After a mysterious craft falls to earth, the governments of the world partake in the Unification War to band together with one goal in mind: To restore the ship that fell from the stars. On the day of its initial launch, Hikaru Ichjiyo, a young stunt pilot is caught into the middle of an alien invasion. Finding himself caught with in the crossfires with this armada looking to use the ship that got away for their own purposes, Hikaru has no choice but to become a soldier and fight to protect his friends and family. Along the way, he develops a complicated love triangle with upcoming idol Lynn Minmay and First Lieutenant Misa Hayase.

It’s really hard to talk about a series like Macross because it is such a milestone series and has had such lasting power in the anime community that there is no denying the hold that it possesses. The series starts strong with an alien ship crashing to earth, continues with incredible mecha fight scenes in space, and rounds itself off by focusing on the intense love triangle that the series became known for. An anime fan that has not seen Macross, is someone who needs to realize they have a lot that they still need to check out. This series is one that must not be missed.

166b6c989634c395a19e63d7f9a6dbf9Of course I’m not going to just gush all over this series. I’m aware its not without its faults. Thanks to the American Version of this series, the name Minmay became associated with a very character that was very annoying and unnecessary. Know that is more in the Robotech version of the show and doesn’t truly carry back into the original series. The original voice actress and the Japanese songs were fair more entertaining then the ones that were made for the american audience. If your finding it hard to believe that these songs could be that annoying, just pop over to YouTube and check them out. Trust me, they aren’t exactly something you add to a favorite playlist.

There also is the issue with the additional nine episodes. Originally the series was just supposed to be a 27 episode series. Then the audience and ratings for the show were insane so the studio tacked on an additional nine episodes which really do feel very tacked on. This is especially true considering that in the 27th episode an incredible planet wide battle took place and the most of the Earth was destroyed in the process. Kinda hard to come back after hitting a high point like that.

Despite the drag in the attached episodes, the series is still good and started a franchise that is continuing today. I look back fondly on Macross and would gladly rewatch it if I was blessed with more time in my life. For now I’ll keep remembering love and the importance of protoculture.

Gasaraki

17897

There are series that stay with you for years to come that you reflect on with great nostalgia. Then there are the shows that annoy you to the point that you look at them with malice and contempt (I’m looking at you Burst Angel). But there is another category of shows that are so bland and forgettable that is not until you find it mentioned elsewhere that you remember “Oh yeah I did see that.” This i s the case of Gasara.

Yushiro Gowa is a member of the a military squadron sent into the Middle East. On top of being a pilot of a TA (mecha of the series), Yushiro is also a member of the family that is helping to produce the machine and are set to make a high profit in the new battlefield. As Yushiro deploys he finds himself being drawn away spiritually by a rival pilot Miharu. As he dives deeper in to this spiritual connection he finds that his family, have unlocked a power from long ago that helped them to establish themselves in the world today. Now, he might find himself having to pay for his family’s sins.

gasaraki-screenshot04

Gasaraki is a series with serious pacing issues. It tries to be deep with its themes of mysticism and trying to tie them to modern robotics is stretched out and lost to the point they are rushing to explain the connection in the last episode. This is best shown in the series finale, where Yushior’s sister Misuzu is being absorbed by the demon armor (don’t really remember why and frankly don’t care to find out) but is saved at last minute by Yushiro right before the credits start to roll without letting us know how the revelation to the cast that this ancient mysticism helped to make their mechas. Not that we really get to know any of the characters in a proper manner. I still can’t remember a single name of any of the members of Yushior’s team.

500px-Gasaraki_Ending_-_Love_Song

As I stated in the opening this series falls in the middle in terms of the whole Good/Bad spectrum. Of course in this day and age of my anime watching that’s almost a greater sin then being terrible series. I mean think about it. Good series you adore, rally behind, and tell your friends about how much you enjoyed watching it. Bad series you hate on, pick apart, and complain to your friends about how terrible it was to suffer through. What do you do with the middle of the road series that are okay at best and forgettable at worst? Not much really. I was able to see this series because I borrowed it form a friend who got it off a bargain bin sale. If you are able to duplicates these circumstances when you watch this series then by all means go for it. If not then its probably best to stay away from this one.

Top 10 Human Companions in Transformers

Fans are quick to pass off the importance of the human element in the different Transformer series. Humans have helped the Autobots on many occasions to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat but still they are easily dismissed as being unnecessary. So, as a way to showcase the great these characters do, I have put together a list of the top 10 Human Companions over the different Transformers’ series.

Alexis

10. Alexis (Transformers Armada)
Alexis is the only competent human in this entire series. The four boys are incredible immature and are unable to take the fact that they are involved in an intergalactic war seriously. There also is the fact that she has a bond and shipping relationship with Starscream. In the follow up series she rises to the position of diplomat as a liaison between Humans and Autobots. Definitely worth the 10th position.
kicker-6

9. Kicker (Transformers Energon)
Making this list Ive noticed a pattern. Kids that start out annoying but eventually grow up and do what needs to be done. Kicker starts out as a kid that back talks to Optimus Prime but eventually helps to bridge a gap with Alpha Q which helps to learn more about the history behind Unicron. Also he wields the depowered Star Saber pretty nicely.

300px-TFTM_Daniel_in_exosuit
8. Daniel (Transformers: The movie and Headmasters)
Again a kid that starts off as annoying but proves his worth. In his first appearance he helps save Bumblebee, Jazz, and Cliffjumper. In the Japanese series Headmasters, he helps befriends the new headmasters as they take over for the series. He appears low on the list though because he is known to cry at the drop of the hat.

Junior_braces

7. Headmasters Junior (Transformers: Supergod Masterforce)
There are many on this list that gain powers and gadgets that help them to fight with the Autobots against the Decepticons. These kids though actually use Transectors to turn into Transformers and fight side by side to defend there home. I`m putting the kids on this list over Ginrei because the Human Companions are always secondary characters to the Transformers and Ginrei rises to the leader roll soon after he appears in the series.
200px-SpikeWitwickyG1-ManofSteel

6. Spike (IDW comics)

IDW gives us a Spike we have never seen before. This one is a specially trained soldier and member of the government trained Anti-Transformer team, Skywatch. He also has a way of taking down Decepticons without any back up or even his Mecha suit. I mean seriously he single handedly takes down a constructicon. That`s Chuck Norris levels of action hero.
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

5. N.E.S.T. (Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon)
Anyone who has seen Revenge of the Fallen knows what would have made that movie better. More of the N.E.S.T. team and less of Sam Witwicky. The opening act with the team taking down rough Decepticons in China was one of the best actions sequences in all of Transformers. Unfortunately the movie is all down hill from there. Still, give credit where credit is due and appreciate that how awesome this team is.

180px-Moneyiseverything_marissa_dress_uniform
4. Marissa Faireborn (Transformers)
Before Micheal Bay ever had a chance to turn the characters to the billion dollar box office draw they are now and paired the Autobots with humans to fight against evil, there was Marissa Faireborn. Showing up in the third season she worked as a government liaison and secret agent helping to fight against the Decepticons. She has started showing up in the IDW series and her impressiveness continues to shine. Just don’t ask about the whole “Kiss Players” fiasco.

250px-DarknessRising4-Mikophone
3. Miko (Transformers: Prime)
Once again a character that starts annoying and eventually proves to be much more. Miko and Bulkhead’s relationship is one of the most touching ones in all of transformers history. The rage she feels when Builkhead gets injured after fighting Hardshell is tangible and authentic. She also becomes an honorary member of the Wreckers and takes the Apex armor out for a spin. Not bad for kid obsessed with heavy metal.

2503975-verity_wheels_tf_last_stand_of_the_wreckers_2
2. Verity (IDW comics)
Speaking of honorary Wreckers, lets turn to the IDW comics. Verity starts as a kid on the run only to be caught in the the Autobot/Decepitcon war. After a huge time jump we see Verity has been slumming with the Wreckers. We bare witness to Verity taking part in the retaking of an Autobot prison from the villainous Overlord. She survives and is able to tell the stories of those who fell during the storyline “Last Stand of the Wreckers.”

150px-Sari_Animated

1. Sari (Transformers: Animated)
Sari gets a lot of crap because of her Key. Yes she had a Key that allows her to heal the team and help track down All Spark fragments. Still her aid to helping the Autobots to understand human culture and giving them a base of operations is invaluable. She also has a great bond with  Bumblebee. Her storyline is rushed in the third season and e don’t have the time to explore more of the mysteries behind her origin. Also there was no episode addressing how her powers went out of control. She stabbed Bumblebee. Why was this story never touched upon?

Godzilla vs. King Ghidora

5356937442_2604f7fd91_b

Ever had that film that does so many things so wrong that you want to writ it off as terrible but keep giving it the benefit of still being entertaining because of a few scenes. That is Godzilla vs. King Ghidora in a nut shell. The movie falls onto its face for most of the film until the very end. the real question though is “Is sitting through the bad parts worth the greatness that comes at the end?”

A flying saucer flies through Japan that turns out to be visitors from the future. They say they wish to help get rid of Godzilla by going back to the past and stopping him from mutating into a his current fire breathing form. But there true intention is far more sinister as they hope to create a monster of even greater force: King Ghidora.

The expression “Jumping the shark” refers to when a series goes far from the original message or theme. You`d think that a film series involving mutant dinosaurs, mystical guardians awakened by song, and space cockroaches disguised as humans. that jumping the shark would be impossible. Still, thanks tot he introduction of time travel, such a feat is accomplished. And man does it make the move feel awkward. That and the humans make several turns with their operations. First they get rid of Godzilla, but need him back then need the defeated King Ghidora to defeat him. You’d think after messing things up the first time they would leave well enough alone and just let things work out. The time space continuum only needs to be messed up so much before you just wish someone would use the time machine to make it so things never got messed up in the first place.

There is also the whole aspect with the Android which really helps to hammer in the “Jumping the shark” aspect. He just feels totally out place during the movie. And before anyone tries to remind me of Katsura from Terror of Mechagodzilla as she was a cyborg, hold your horses. Katsura’s presence as a cyborg was much more underlying and not nearly as overplayed. She wasn’t running down cars in Tokyo in an obvious homage to another movie with killer android disguised as a human from the future.

godzillavskingghidorah

Not to say this movie is not without its perks. For starters this is the first time we actually get to see Godzilla fight King Ghidora one on one without any other monsters giving him any aid. The fight is gloriously topped off by the fact that Godzilla does more damage to his winged foe then in any other movie before. The use of Mecha-King Ghidora is a very interesting spin on a classic villain and a better take than Kaiser Ghidora from Final wars. Also Yasuaki Shindo played by Yoshio Tsuchiya is one of the most memorable humans in a kaiju movie. Watching him respectfully bow to an oncoming force of destruction he once come to look upon as a savior was truly touching. Basically since those two aspects come at the end of the movie you’d be better just using the DVD to jump to the last hour to get the best part of the film. Which is the best advice I can give for this movie.
