Godzilla vs. Biolantte

MV5BMTI2MjIzMDg1MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDMxOTMyMQ@@._V1_SX214_AL_

Today’s film is my favorite Godzilla movie. This is the film I have watched over and over to the point that my VHS copy of the film will probably burst into flames if I watch it again. This is the film that I push every time I run a Godzilla panel because I want everyone to see it. If its not obvious already, I love this movie.

After the events of The Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1985 as it was called in America) the world has begun to rebuild and prepare for Godzilla’s returns. With the formation of the special task force, G-Force to combat the King of the Monster, new methods of attack are investigated. To this end Dr. Shiragami, a reclusive scientist is recruited to work on the weapon. Dr. Shiragami has his own plans and tries to use the cells to revive a plant he believes has the spirit of his dead daughter. The results is a monstrous rose known as Biollante. As Godzilla appears he makes a beeline to the new creation and battle ensues.

One of the most appealing elements of this movie is the world building. The lack of knowledge or feel over the fact that humans live in a world where giant monsters could appear at a moment’s notice always annoyed me. Putting measures and procedures into place for such an attack should just be a way of life. This film opens with the different levels of the Godzilla appearance scale. There are buildings dedicated to those that were lost in the last Godzilla attack. This is a world that experienced a monster attack and is ready for when the next one takes place. Also, there is the subplot of people who are intentionally using Godzilla’s cells as a means to get a leg up in the energy race across the globe. Again, this is a world that definitely feels like its feeling the impact of giant mutated dinosaurs stomping around and causing havoc.

This film introduces us to Miki Saegusa the one character that we will observe and follow the rest of the Heisei era films. Here she starts as a young girl with psychic abilities working at a center for people who have special talents. We also watch her become contracted by G-Force for her abilities. This is not the last time she will be asked to use her gifts to take on Godzilla. Truth be told, she was my first movie character crush.

968full-godzilla-vs.-biollante-screenshot

Biollante is unique and I meant that in a very good way. Other than Destroyah, she is the only monster that is original in the Heisei era. All others are based off or modified monsters that we saw previously in the Showa Era films. She definitely leaves an impression with her tentacles and her acid spitting abilities. Sadly she is still a plant and is very vulnerable to Godzilla’s radioactive blast and thereby easier to kill.

Basically if I have not gushed enough I will say it again “Go see this film!” This is the movie that I keep coming back to every now and again to remind myself just how much I enjoy Kaiju films. My only wish is that other films of the Heisei era stuck with this level of intensity and awesomeness. Sadly, its a bumpy ride from here. If you don’t believe me check through the archives for my review of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Compared to this, the rating went down considerable.

King Kong (1933)

kongmain

The mission statement of this blog has been and will always be very simple. To look through the vast genre of shows and movies that star giant monsters and robots and to be as inviting as I can with those who are new to this area. To hopefully steer them in a direction that helps in getting the most enjoyment from the media that they possible can. To this end I make it a point to take the time to review movies that may be thought of as ancient to some but are still staples in the genre. Today we have a film that became pivotal as not only a giant monster movie but as a milestone in cinema history.

Filmmaker Carl Denham is about to cast off to the mysterious Skull Island to shoot a film and casts a young girl named Ann Darrow to be his leading lady. As they sail Ann starts to fall in love with Jack, the first mate of the ship. As they arrive on Skull Island they find that a large gate has been erected and the villagers want Ann as a sacrifice to the monster behind the wall. Soon Ann is kidnapped and offered to King Kong, the Eight Wonder of the World.

king-kong-subido-al-empire-state-building

This film grabs you from the start and keeps you engaged until the end. Beginning with the stirring music of the overture and the busy streets of New York we watch as a team is put together for a simple movie shoot. From there we are taken to an island untouched by civilization and bare witness to creatures that were thought lost to time itself. We watch what happens when we try to bring a beast from this lost world back and the terrible ramifications that come from it. It is true entertainment.

One of the best points when looking at this film is the stop motion. It is a site to behold. The dinosaurs that the crew encounters, that Kong fights, and Kong himself look incredible and when you realize that every movement had to be taken frame by frame, it will truly blow your mind. I’d gush over it more but I would much prefer that you go out and experience this film for yourself.

Ann_Darrow_1933_2
The film is not without some bad points though. Fay Wray’s screaming is high pitched to say the least. Her performance even gave birth to a legacy of characters known as Scream Queens, whose sole purpose was to look attractive for the audience and scream in terror. There also is the cheesy acting from Ann and Jack as they are flirting which was even poked at with love in the 2005 remake. Still, these are minor issues that don’t subtract from the film as a whole.

For those who are complaining that you don’t want to see the movie because its in black and white, you need to grow up. A lot of classic film is in black and white or has a poor color scheme to it but the films themselves still need to be seen. If you can’t handle watching the film, you might want to ask if your really in it for the long haul as a movie buff.

The original King Kong is a film that live up to the hype and acclaim surrounding it. The fact that the film has been parodied and referenced so many times is evidence to the effect that the film has had on the world. Any giant monster fan needs to take the time to watch the original film and appreciate the greatness that helped to start a legacy of movies and movie creators that came from watching and bearing witness to the greatness that was this film. Kong truly is the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Colossal News: Adult Iron GX

Hmm. That title sounds like some kid of vitamin supplement. Anyways a lot of articles have surfaced for once again its time for COLASSAL NEWS.

CJaFt2SUsAAqIvFirst up, the cult film and childhood favorite of many, the Iron Giant will be returning to theaters this fall. Fathom events will be having special screenings of the film and this release will apparently include new scenes. I still have to review this movie for the blog but let’s be honest. This one is an automatic A.

Next up is information on the new Mobile Suit Gundam series has been released. The new show will be called Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and is set to debut in October 4th of this year. There is also talks of streaming it here in America but I hope they figure out a better way then the YouTube channel of GundamInfo which won’t let me watch the English Subs of Reconquista in G here in the states. keyvisual01-144503

Also, if anyone was wondering about where the Gundam Review are on this site and how I can keep calling myself a Mecha fan without ever touching the Franchise I have good news. I am working on making “Gundam Month” where I will have an entry everyday covering a series or movie in the Franchise. I’m still working on getting all those review together so give me a bit. They are coming I promise.

News has also surfaced of a new Transformers cartoon that will be directed at adults. Gaming and media website Machinima will be helping to create the show which will air on their website. The cartoon is said to be based on the IDW comic series, which has helped to produce some of the best Transformer story lines ever. Trust me if your a Transformers fan and not reading those comics then you are missing out.

Finally in a historical first Crunchyroll will be simultaneously broadcasting a Tokusatsu show as its running in Japan. The show is the latest entry into the Ultraman Franchise, called Ultraman X. Check out the Facebook for the usual small comments about the episodes as they come out.

That`s all for now. Untiil next time, GO BIG OR GO HOME! Still working on my sign out.

Colossal News: Googling a giant robot ambassador

Welcome to a new segment on this blog that I call, COLOSSAL NEWS! This is where I’m going to take the time to discuss news articles that I feel fall under this blogs criteria. My way of talking about some recent events without doing a full review or anything like that. Lets get started.

Google-doodle-Tsuburaya

First up, a big shout out to Google who decided to celebrate Eiji Tsuburaya’s birthday in style. The custom google splash allows a person to make their own mini-kaiju movie. I already tried it myself and found it to be a lot of fun. Happy Birthday to the late but still true Master of Monsters. I really need to get around to reading that biography of his I have on my shelf.

Next up, Its America vs. Japan…WITH GIANT ROBOTS! American robot developers out of Texas have created a robot called the Megabot MK 2 and have now challenged the Japanese robot, Kuratas to a duel. And Japan accepted! They are still working out all the details on how the fight will play out but it will surely an event I’ll keep a look out for. All we need now is for an announcer to yell, “GUNDAM FIGHT! READY? GO!”

3192155-...

Finally, as I have to talk about it even in the Facebook group, lets give it up for Godzilla! Early this year the King of Monsters was officially made a Japanese citizen and was given the honor of being an ambassador of tourism for the country. Way to go Big G! I’m looking forward to your work as an ambassador as well as your film next year from your old mother company of Toho studios.

godzilla-ambassador-tourism-japan-tokyo

That will just about do it. Remember everyone, LIVE LARGE! Also I’m just toying with that as a closing line. IF you feel I should try something else let me know. Helpful criticism is always welcome.

Beast King Go-lion

voltron-lions

I’m going to go retro on this review. I mean really retro to the point that this anime came out before a lot of people who read this were even born. This was one of the first animes I ever saw and it became a classic to many. Americans recognize it more under the name Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Though I’ve seen a great of the American adaptation I will instead be looking at the original anime, Beast King Golion.

After they return to Earth and find it destroyed, 5 explorers (who go by the nicknames Chief, Quiet, Moody, Shorty, and Hothead) get captured by the evil forces of the Galra Empire. Escaping to the planet Altea, the 5 five find a castle and the planet’s ruler, Princess Fala. Entrusted the keys to the five robot lions by the Princess, the explorers set out and fight against the invading forces of Galra. When they need more power, the lions combine into the ultimate warrior, The Beast King Golion.

177

I’m taking a different approach with this show and I’m gonna focus more on the steps to adapt this show for an American Audience. On the plus side, the original has a few things going for it. First off there is death. Quiet (Sven in the original), that monster that Shorty (Pidge, who had the worst adaptation name ever) befriended, and even Lady Hys all buy the farm. This really raises the stakes of the battles they fight. Also there is no Galaxy Garrison as this was an added feature that would later be used to connect the series to the Vehicle Voltron Series (originally known as Armored Fleet Dairugger XV). The Garrison isn’t needed as the team was originally just explorers who came back to and found earth destroyed by the thermonuclear war. The human race destroyed itself and the bad guys just happened to show up to collect anyone alive for their entertainment. Also the team gets to watch Earth get destroyed. Sorry Earth. You had a good run.

The are some negative aspects that were changed by the shows conversion when it came to America though. For starters the company added some songs. The original anime used the opening song (which was lacking to say the least) over and over again, especially when the robots combine. meanwhile, Voltron was overflowing with 80s synthesizer goodness. Also, the voice over during the combination is not there and feels missing with it. I found myself saying “Form Feet and Legs” as the fusion took place. Its a small missing piece but give that it happens every episode it becomes very noticeable.

fiverobotlionsoflionforcevoltrondefenderoftheuniverse8027sretrokidsshow

The robot is iconic even to this day. Made up of five lion robots each powered by a different element, these machines come together to form an impressive warrior. Seems like every other episode this combined machine is pulling out a new weapon or power. Still, to finish the monster of the week off, Golion forms the Juoken (10 Kings Sword) aka the Blazing Sword to slice the monster apart. This is cool but can get a bit old considering its the only finishing move used and it almost never fail.

The series does get a bit repetitive but still there is something to enjoy here as long as a person can get over the aging animation. Still, I can understand where people would be hesitant to come back to this show. Without my nostalgia for the series I found myself finding it difficult to keep watching. Somethings just aren’t as awesome as we remember them.

Sunshine Award Nomination

sunshine
Recently I was once again nominated for another blogging award. I really appreciate all the help I’ve been getting to help makes this blog the best it can be. A big shout out to dandylion13 for the nomination. Alright time to get to work.

Here are the rules as I’ve been told:

– Thank the Person who nominated you

– Answer the questions from the person who nominated you.

– Nominate a few other bloggers.

– Write the same amount of questions for the bloggers you nominated.

– Notify the bloggers on their blog.

– Put the award button on your blog.

I thanked Dandylion13. Better answer the questions next:

1. What if your favourite movie? If you don’t enjoy movies then , what is your book?

Transformers-movieposter-west

I have a lot of movies that I love. But since this is the my blog about big things, I’ll go with the original Transformers movie. I still listen to the soundtrack on a daily basis. 80s synth rock for the win!

2. Who is you favourite hero? I don’t necessarily mean Superhero, I mean anything from fiction or reality that you consider your hero.

Ironman02

Iron Man!

3. Do you watch stand-up comedy? If so, who if your favourite comedian?

titus

I love stand-up comedy. My favorite comedian is Christopher Titus. I loved his show back on Fox and I now follow his podcast and love his comedy specials.

4. What is your least favourite anime and why?

brainpowerd

Brain Powered. An Anime so bad that I couldn’t even finish it. Its convoluted and I didn’t get attached to any of the characters. I never finished it so I hesitate to review it but I think I should and just state it was impossible to finish.

5. What is your favourite food? It could be anything… ANYTHING!

italian_2_adjust

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I love a good Italian sub.

6. What do you enjoy about blogging?

Feedback! There is nothing like writing and actually being able to get comments about what you wrote done.

7. What is Love?

Personally I feel that we get caught up too much in the idea of Romantic Love. Not everyone needs to find a sense that special someone and settle down in a dream house to have achieved love. I feel love is a feeling of belonging and contentment and if you are able to achieve that then CONGRATULATIONS! You win at life.

SaitoHiragaxLouiseFrancoiseleBlancd

That being said, “I love my wife very much” and I’m glad I did find romantic love. What I’m trying to say is people shouldn’t get obsess over finding it but it is awesome when you succeed.

Whats next? Nominate some people. Damn I really have to follow more blogs. I’m gonna give a shout out to one of my fans and nominate LitaKinoAnimeReviews. Here are the questions to be answered:

1. What animes are you waiting to come out?
2. What was the last bad movie you watched? Was it entertaining bad or just bad bad?
3. Do you have a favorite book or Author?
4. Who is your favorite Giant Monster?
5. What is your favorite Giant Robot?
6. Favorite Comfort food? Not Necessarily your favorite food but that one food that makes you feel at ease?
7. Ever been to a conventions? If yes, when is your next one.

Again, thanks for the nomination Dandylion13.

Frankenstein Conquers the World, Part 1

height_300_width_200_overlay_Episode213

I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on a podcast I enjoy. Derek Kock hosts Monster Kid Radio which talks about the classic and sometimes not so classic movies of yesteryear and he let me come and and talk some giant monster. The movie we discussed? Frankenstein Conquers the WorldA Head over there and give it a listen. I’m sure you’ll enjoy us gushing about our love for giant monster movies.

Correction: While re-listening to this podcast I realized that in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla they make reference to maser cannons being first introduced fighting against the two creatures from War of the Gargantuas. Since War of the Gargantuas is a semi-sequel to Frankestein Conquers the World, this Frankenstein is thereby part of the Godzilla canon.

Mahou Sentai Magiranger

tumblr_m0etz0LhEb1qe011fo1_500

I’m overdue to once again review a Sentai series. I also haven’t taken the time to review any Kamen Rider Series. Thinking of making those a Patreon exclusive. I’ll work on those later. For now, let’s talk about the magical family, the Ozus.

The Infershia, a monster race, wish to revive their master, N Ma and take over the surface world. Ozu Miyuki takes notice and starts to fight but finds its too much for her. After her defeat, her children, Kai, Tsubasa, Ura, Houka, and Makito take up the charge and become the team, Mahou Sentai Magiranger to fight the Infershia with the power of courage as their main weapon.

magiscr

The team is family based and each of them has a role and personality based on that. Each member fulfills there roles very much how they are in the family line up. Kai, the youngest is hot headed and eager to prove himself. Tsubasa the middle son is always looking for a fight. Makito, the oldest son is doing his best to watch over the whole family. Houka, the youngest daughter is spacey at times. Ura, the oldest daughter is almost a mother figure to the rest of the team. Top it off with the 6th member, Hikaru who comes in like a new teacher to help polish there skills and there’s your team. Not bad at all once they really get into the sync of things. NEOGDS-55432_3

The mecha of this series is interesting as the team actually transforms into their robots. Each of which is based on a different magical beast (Phoenix, Fairy, Mermaid, Garuda, Minotaur). This is interesting as they later still combine and become a bigger robot. A bit out there but I do like the look of the main megazord. Maybe because of the different spells, they use through the series resulting in different final attacks. The 6th member uses a train. A magical train. I wonder if its parked at platform 9 3/4. Sadly there is no ultrazord or major combination. Sad but still impressive designs. Magi12

The villains are massive to say the least. The series goes through 2 commanders, 10 members of a special boss group, and the main villain on top of the usual monster of the week. There also is the dark night Wolzard who has much more to him than meets the eye. Also, I’m very partial to the minion characters of Nai and Mare are adorable. 2 girls in Gothic Lolita outfits that are evil, but see the light and become good. Yes. Please. This is definitely a series where the villains grow on you and you find yourself drawn to the evil they do.

The series has a good flow to it and one of the most memorable and heart warming ending to a series I can remember. In the total, this series was memorable and even though its not one of my favorite themes. I’m still looking forward dot he next Sentai that is magical base.d I do wish though with all the crossovers with Kamen Riders that the team would be seen fighting along side Kamen Rider Wizard. Sees like wasted potential. Maji Maji Majiro!

Space Dandy

Space_Dandy_promotional_image

With the way that anime is aired these days there are usually two seasons of a show with a break in between them (unless said show only gets 12-13 episodes). If a lot happens in both seasons then I will take the time to review the seasons individually (much like I’m doing with Valvrave the Liberator. Season 2 review comes later this year folks). If the story just continues to the point you can’t tell when the new season starts then I’ll simply review it as a whole. Today’s series fits right into the later category. A series that takes place…IN SPACE.

I’ll just let the opening narration do the job of summarizing the series.

Space Dandy. He’s a dandy guy in space. He combs the galaxy like his pompadour on the hunt for aliens. Planet after planet he search, discovering new creatures both friendly and not. These are the spectacular adventures of Space Dandy and his brave space crew in space.

L9UOChD

Space Dandy is best described as being random. Each episodes focuses on him with his pals QT (a cleaning robot) and Meow (a cat alien who loves his phone) looking for rare aliens. The characters experience a lot of random and often character changing events including being turned into zombies and destroying the universe they were residing in. These changes never stick though and the characters reset every episodes as if nothing happened at all. It makes it a series you don’t really appreciate as a whole but more appreciate for its individual parts. There are single episodes that are fun and memorable such as the one where Scarlet and Dandy go on a date or when the team meets alternate versions of themselves from different universes.3984178-1123055438-72594

The series does fall under the category of mecha as Dandy does a space ship that turns into a giant robot wearing a Hawaiian shirt. You read that right. Of course thanks to the randomness that the series experiences it crosses the lines of a lot of different genres including high school life and time travel.

The series is the one of the latest (found out about the series Terror in Resonance as I was writing the review) from Shinichiro Watanabe the legendary director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Does Space Dandy measure up to the director’s previous work? Yes and No. No, it isn’t as ground breaking as Cowboy Bebop or as dramatic as parts of Samurai Champloo but that doesn’t mean its terrible. It seems like it has a purpose. Some of it feels like Watanabe was using Space Dandy as an experiment. As if he was trying to figure out which genre he liked most so he know what type of story he wants to tell next. Worst series have been produced by directors being experimental Let us not forget Shoji Kawamori’s Earth Maiden Arjuna. Wait, most of the fans already forgot about that. Dandy_Zombies

Space Dandy is fun at the very least. It’s not a total failure from a great director or his finest hour but it is entertaining. We can only hope that this experiment has helped to train him to deliver another masterpiece that will be stored forever in the halls of anime fandom. Hopefully something with Giant Robots in it.
